MEI Works to Reduce Environmental Impact

Choose Language:

Leading payments systems manufacturer MEI has made a commitment to minimise the impact of its products on the environment over and above its legal obligations. In accordance with European legislation, MEI now ensures that all products that are produced for use in Europe comply with the RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) regulations. This includes older products and in these cases compliance has led to significant re-development and consequent costs.
European Marketing Director Richard Gibson says: “Complying with this legislation has led to a programme of redevelopment for our older products, and MEI has incurred significant increases in component costs as a result. This is something we are currently trying to manage with our suppliers. However, it is more important to comply with regulations to reduce the environmental impact of our products.
“For instance, in the case of the WEEE directive, MEI's understanding is that the products we produce are not covered by it because they are considered component parts. However, we feel an obligation to minimise any impact our products have on the environment and will be looking to work within the intent of this directive.”
